Breeders
The vast majority of dog breeders are loving, caring people who love the dogs and want the best for them. This includes making sure that the people who give homes to their puppies are going to take good care of their canine friends. Expect lots of tough questions, and listen to the years of experience that your puppy’s breeder is able to share. There’s good and bad in every walk of life, and dog breeding is no exception. You will of course want to identify and stay away from anyone who is breeding dogs as an industry – simply because the dogs’ health and wellbeing will not be a priority – money will be the priority. Puppy farmers often keep the bitches in terrible conditions, and this will have an effect on the new lives they produce. Don’t support this industry. Avoid advertisements selling many different breeds of dogs. Always insist upon meeting the puppy’s mother. Expect a proud and ethical breeder to show off the dogs in their care, and the conditions in which dogs are raised.
Grandma says:
If you are fortunate enough to find a breeder who rears naturally, you’ll know that they’ve studied canine health and are prepared to go that extra mile for the dogs they bring into this world. Natural rearers don’t just do what everyone else does, just because everyone else does it. They are discerning. You couldn’t ask for a better start in life for any puppy.
There is a growing body of natural rearing breeders around the world. In the US there is the Natural Rearing Breeders Association (NRBA) and breeder directories at http://lepusreg.tripod.com/NRB.html and www.barfworld.com. In Canada there is AuNaturelK9s, a group dedicated to natural rearing breeders. In the UK there isn't an organisation that brings together natural breeders, so Grandma is starting a list for you!! Below are some natural breeders. If you breed naturally or know of others in the UK please contact us with details and we'll add them to the list. Please note that Grandma has not vetted individual breeders and you should therefore ask relevant questions to ensure you get a dog that has been bred how you want.
